The Commonality is the name given to the psychic link that joins all Taelons together. It was first formed by the progenitor of the Taelons, Raj'el, millions of years ago. As a neural connection, the Commonality allows all members of the species to feel the emotions of the others, and when a Taelon dies a ripple goes out throughout the commonality alerting the others of the passing. The Commonality does not allow individual Taelons to read the minds of others of their kind, but the combined 'will of the commonality' can impact the behaviour of individuals. Theoretically, the common will of the species prevents individuals from acting out against the best interests of the race, but as the core energy crises unfolded and the population declined, the commonality was seen to weaken. When the Latin American companion Ram perished, it was noted that there was barely a ripple alerting of his passing. The weakened state of the commonality also allowed Zo'or to commit murder multiple times.
When Taelons die, a portion of them remains within the commonality, as an echo or impression.
