The Khmer Rouge (translated as Red Cambodians) was the name given to followers of the Communist Party of Kampuchea who were the ruling party in Cambodia from 1975-1979. Under the Khmer Rouge, the country's name was changed to Democratic Kampuchea.

In an effort to create an agrarian-based Communist society, the Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot forced over two million people to leave their lives in the city and move to the country to work in agriculture. The civil rights of these people were entirely compromised.

During the rule of the Khmer Rouge nearly four million people were killed. These people were mostly intellectuals, city-dwellers and minorities who were suspected of treason against the party. The vast areas where these murders took place came to be known as the Killing Fields.
